The Women's International Glass Workshop is a collective of contemporary glass artists. Every two years, the members meet to exhibit together and to experience another host country.

WIGW first met in Iceland in 1989. This was in response to an invitation from Sigridur Asgeirsdottir, ‘Systa’, during a gathering at the seminal exhibition “36 Women from 12 Countries”.

Since then the workshops continued, organised and hosted by our members. In the early days members invited other artists to join each workshop however we found by the 4th workshop that numbers were becoming unmanageable for travelling together so decided to maintain it at 20 members.

Typically a workshop starts with the exhibition installation followed by a public seminar or opening event, We then travel together to view specific sites of interest in the host country. Inspired by these collective workshop experiences WIGW create works during and following the workshop to be shared and exhibited at the next one.

“Our personality, language, styles, artistic expression, how to ‘face the glass’ and working methods are quite different, yet we stimulate one another through the workshop. This year on year shared professional experience has deepened our relationships and friendships.”
